Biography

Michael joined the family business, established over one hundred and fifty years ago, in 1976. He was instrumental in driving diversification and founded a multitude of companies with multiple interests. Michael established companies in Malta and internationally, from Malta's first mobile telephony company (Vodafone) to Egypt's leading mobile company. Michael brought the Internet to Malta with the first ISP, Terranet Limited (Maltanet). He founded Russia's first VOIP in 1999 and was amongst the first to be involved in Malta's fledgling financial services industry (Capitol Nominee Services Limited) was a founding shareholder of Mediterranean Bank Limited. The extensive interests include Malta Mediterranean Link Company Limited, which owns the majority shareholding in Malta International Airport, Maltco Limited (the national lottery operator), the Dragonara Casino, Airport Investments Limited (operators of retail outlets and duty free shops) and other interests including internet related activities, property development, language schools, yacht yards, yacht marinas, ferry services. The Group is involved in Education, ownership and management of Hotels. He has served as a non-executive Director on entities in Malta and internationally including companies listed on Stock Exchanges. Michael is a PQed individual by various authorities including the MFSA, the MGA and Argel.

Michael is a founder member of the Vodafone foundation, trustee of the President's Trust and on the Board of Administrators of the Emanuele Cancer Research Foundation and a Board Member on the Foundation for the Wellbeing of Society. He is Honorary Consul General for the Republic of Austria and was awarded by Austria the Medal of Honour in 2008 and the Grand Decoration of Honour in 2018. In 2018 Michael was conferred as a member of the National Order of Merit by Malta.
