Biography

Nicholas Baldacchino was appointed Honorary Consul of Slovenia on 24th May 1993 and as Honorary Consul General of Slovenia on 29th August 2014.

He is now retired after 45 years of professional work associated with the maritime industry. His career started at the Royal Naval Dockyard in Malta, when after 3 years at the Dockyard Technical School, he won a scholarship to continue his studies at Portsmouth Royal Naval Dockyard Technical College and later at the Portsmouth College of Technology where he graduated as a Naval Architect. He is also a Warranted Engineer and Fellow of the Royal Institution of Naval Architects.

He worked as Warship Production Superintendent at the Minesweeper Base of Ministry of Defence (Navy) in Hythe, UK until 1967. He started as a Surveyor of Ships with Lloyd’s Register of Shipping at Liverpool, London, Yugoslavia and Spain. In 1977, he joined Bureau Veritas and worked in Hamburg, Paris and Rotterdam before returning to Malta as Chief Executive and in charge of ship surveying, technical audits, ISO auditing and inspection of industrial production on behalf of Undewriters Laboratories Inc.

He was the Honorary Consul of Yugoslavia, Chairman of Royal Institution of Naval Architects and Royal Institute of Marine Engineers (Malta Branch) and ex-Director of Tug Malta Ltd, Investment Finance Bank, Malta Shipbuilding Co Ltd and ex-Chairman of Accreditation Council of FELTOM. He received the “Medaille d’Honneur du Travail” from the French Minister de l’Emploi et de la Solidarite on 30th January 1998.

The Honorary Consulate General is entrusted with the task of promoting all-round cooperation between Slovenia and Malta and exercises its functions with the assistance of the Embassy of Republic of Slovenia in Rome and provides assistance to Slovene citizens as well as information about Slovenia, its economy
